What to do while waiting for the electricity to come back on

It’s been well over a month now of energy rationing. Initially it was to have ended by Dec. 1, then Dec. 15, and now we’re told “hopefully” by Christmas Eve. Patience. At least the rationing in my neighborhood takes place in the morning. Sitting in the dark at night is no fun.

The Best of Friends and Little Christmas

Known as Epiphany in the Christian calendar year, in Hispanic countries January 6 is also called the Day of the Magi, commemorating the visit of the Wise Men to the Baby Jesus. But probably most people would know this celebration as “Little Christmas.”

Quiet Christmas

Over the years our family seems to have “shrunk” quite a bit. Well, not really. What has happened is that we’ve spread out and are no longer located in one country, let alone one city!

All those cookies!

Well, Christmas Eve is here and I didn’t meet my goal of 20 different varieties of cookies. I’m blaming my daughter-in-law Allison for that. (-: Normally we do all this baking together, but she’s back in the U.S. with the kids this year, and I find it isn’t half as much fun to bake without […]

Handmade Gifts

Although as a family we make an effort not to fall for the commercial traps surrounding the Christmas season, I have to admit I do like to give gifts. Even in this, though, I strive for simplicity.

Christmas Tablerunner

I confess: I’ve become addicted to English Paper Piecing. I keep a bag with 3/4″ freezer paper hexagons (my favorite size) by the iron and have now developed the habit of ironing them onto small scraps as they become available from other projects, and from there into the little sewing case I carry in my […]

Christmas samples and learning boutis

It seems incredible that half a year has already gone by and here we are in July! And so much of my time continues to be consumed by teaching, with little time left for sewing and other activities. With Alexia out on vacation, though, I have been lucky to have a great helper.

Christmas Hexagons

I know… it seems early in the year for Christmas projects. However, I’ve become addicted to English paper piecing lately and since it takes some time, I figured why not start something early and actually have it finished by Christmas time!

Tablerunners: One down, two more to go!

As a break between classes and whenever possible in the evenings if not too pooped, I’ve been trying to reduce my stack of UFOs. This week I finished quilting this Hexagon Star tablerunner I’ve had lying around for over a year!
