Growing up, I envied the oh-so-obvious talents of my two younger brothers. They could draw. Oh, boy, could they draw!
Me? I couldn’t draw a straight line if you paid me. So I always figured “I’m just not creative.” Regardless of the fact that from an early age I learned to crochet and knit, and in my twenties started sewing. I invented my own crochet and knitting projects, and even though I did sew using commercial patterns, I learned to tweak them to fit my aesthetic. I didn’t understand then that I was actually involved in a creative process. Because I equated creativity with drawing.
I have been pondering on this subject quite a bit lately, in part because of the book I’ve been reading this week. In her book The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are
And a couple of days ago I came across this TED that made me stop in my tracks. Wow! Just watch…
This resonates with me. It turns out that in my mid-forties I discovered quilting software. And, lo and behold… it turns out I can draw! I just needed a mouse initially, and I now draw with a stylus. That’s a beginning… but could there be more?

I am a self-learner. I taught myself to sew and to quilt. And I taught myself how to draw. I am learning how to dye my own fabrics and am dabbling with mixed media. How could you think you’re not a creative artist? Just give a retrospective sight to your website, to that huge collection of designs you’ve shared with us, and realize your creativity is endless. Everybody has an inner creativity, the matter is to find what we like and start doing it!
