Our friend Susy brought her 6 year-old granddaughter (also named Susy) to our sewing circle this week. And for four hours this tiny little soul sat patiently with us, doing her own thing and –as we we were soon to see– quietly listening and taking it all in.
For a while she worked on her own embroidery project. When she tired of that she turned to drawing. Since her grandma also does tole painting, at one point she instructed the little girl: “Make sure to color inside the lines.” Jamie had joined us at this point for a little visit, and I could tell the teacher in her was cringing, and she started to remonstrate. As it turned out, little Susy held her own and taught us all a lesson, as she quite primly turned to look at her grandmother and very seriously informed her: “In art there are no rules.”
