Quito has often been described as “the land of eternal spring.” Which means we (usually) enjoy lovely, lovely weather all year round. We divide the year in roughly two seasons: winter and summer. All that means is that half of the year there is more rain, while the other tends to be dry.

Another Election Day
Voters in Ecuador returned to the polls again yesterday. This time we were electing our representatives to the Andean Parliament and, in the rural areas, local authorities at the parish level.
General Elections 2009
For what seems like the umpteenth time in the last three years, Ecuador is going back to the polls today to elect (or, more probably re-elect) president and vice-president, assembly members (parliament) and local authorities (mayors and council members).
Handicrafts at the Santa Clara Market
My mom will be traveling to the U.S. next month to visit family and friends. So we decided to take some time yesterday to visit the Santa Clara market and do some handicraft shopping. This market is basically a veggie and fruit market, and on the surrounding streets there are tons of little handicraft shops.
Ecuadorian seafood
For such a tiny country, Ecuadorian cuisine is truly varied and colorful. Being from the capital city, I am obviously a mountain girl and accustomed to the highland food (a lot of corn, grains, legumes, potatoes, veggies…). Yet we are really blessed to be able to obtain all types of food easily.
Fanesca
Fanesca is a traditional soup here in Ecuador and could very well be considered the national dish, as it is prepared throughout the entire country. It is only prepared once a year, during Easter, and served throughout Holy Week.
Down to the valley again
Jamie and I had a doctor’s appointment today (at the same hospital where my son Jonathan was operated on last December), so down the hill and to the Cumbayá valley hospital it was again today. Now Jamie traverses this road every day.

It has been practically raining non-stop in Quito (actually, along quite a bit of the Sierra – our Andes mountain range) for the last week. The two main highways from the mountains to the coast are impassable: a whole section of one was washed away, and the second one has suffered several landslides over the […]
Up and down the valley
I guess I hadn’t mentioned we hospitalized my oldest son two days ago for some kidney-related reconstructive surgery. The hospital he’s at is not that far geographically – just a few miles from Quito, down a windy road to the valley of Cumbayá.
Far from the noise of the city
We have a small country property in Guayllabamba, a beautiful, and very green valley 29 km north of Quito. It’s claim to fame is that it houses the Quito ecological zoo, and on weekends the town overflows with visitors to the zoo and to the many restaurants offering typical highland food.
Shopping in downtown Quito
My 20 year-old daughter Jamie and 10 year-old granddaughter Alexia and I decided to have a girls’ day out today. So we hopped on the trolley and made our way downtown. Now, for those of you who know Quito, this might be confusing, because nowadays people refer to “downtown” as the business sector, which actually […]
